The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most sacred scriptures of Hinduism. It is a conversation between Lord Krishna and Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Arjuna, a great warrior, was confused and scared before the war. He did not want to fight against his own relatives, teachers, and friends. Seeing his hesitation, Lord Krishna gave him wisdom and guidance.

One of the most famous teachings from this conversation is:

कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते संगोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥

Meaning in Hindi:
तुम्हारा अधिकार केवल कर्म करने में है, उसके फल में नहीं। इसलिए तुम कर्मफल की चिंता मत करो और न ही कर्म न करने का मोह रखो।

Meaning in English:
You have the right to perform your actions, but you do not have the right to the results. So, do not worry about the outcome of your actions, and do not get attached to inaction.

This verse teaches an important lesson. Many times, we do something with the hope of a reward. If we do not get the expected result, we feel sad or discouraged. Krishna tells Arjuna that he should focus on doing his duty without thinking about success or failure.

This shloka was said at a crucial moment when Arjuna was in deep sorrow. He did not want to fight because he was afraid of the consequences. He thought about what would happen if he killed his own family members in the war. Krishna told him that he should not worry about the result. His duty as a warrior (Kshatriya) was to fight for justice.

In life, we should follow this rule. To do good for someone is our duty, without expecting thanks or reward. I don’t know what reasons people have to do bad to others, but I don’t need a reason to help someone if it is within my reach and if he has not done anything bad to me in the past. This way of thinking makes life peaceful and meaningful. When we help without expecting anything, it brings true happiness and satisfaction.

The same thing applies when we are trying for success. Working to achieve something while constantly thinking about the result can hold us back. We have to move forward with the mindset that I will do this thing, irrespective of the result. For example, if I have to prepare for an exam, worrying about the result is not helpful. A better approach is to think—Irrespective of whether I clear the exam or not, this is the amount of hard work required. My job is to do this hard work, study this chapter, solve these questions, and practice. This way, I stay focused on my efforts rather than stressing over what will happen. This is a better and healthier approach.
