लाल बहादुर शास्त्री का बचपन मुग़लसराय के छोटे से गाँव में बीता। उनका जीवन साधारण लेकिन संघर्षों से भरा था। पिता का साया उनके सिर से बचपन में ही उठ गया था, और माँ रामदुलारी ने बड़ी मुश्किलों से उनका और उनके भाई-बहनों का पालन-पोषण किया। आर्थिक तंगी के बावजूद, लाल बहादुर का मन हमेशा शिक्षा की ओर लगा रहता। उन्हें किताबें पढ़ने और नई-नई बातें जानने का बहुत शौक था।
गाँव के स्कूल तक पहुँचने के लिए एक चौड़ी और तेज़ बहती हुई नदी पार करनी पड़ती थी। आसपास के बच्चों के पास तो अपनी नावें थीं, लेकिन लाल बहादुर के पास इतने पैसे नहीं थे कि वह नाव का किराया दे सकें। उन्होंने नदी को पार करने का एक साहसी तरीका अपनाया। वह अपने कपड़ों को सिर पर रखकर तैरते हुए नदी पार करते और भीगे हुए कपड़े स्कूल पहुँचने से पहले झाड़ियों के पीछे पहन लेते। यह प्रक्रिया आसान नहीं थी। बरसात के दिनों में नदी का पानी बहुत तेज़ हो जाता था, लेकिन लाल बहादुर का जज़्बा हर मौसम में वैसा ही बना रहा। उनकी माँ ने कई बार उनसे कहा, “इतनी कठिनाई क्यों सहते हो? पढ़ाई छोड़ दो, घर पर रहो।” लेकिन लाल बहादुर का उत्तर हमेशा यही होता, “अगर मुझे पढ़ाई छोड़नी पड़ी, तो मैं बड़ा होकर तुम्हारी मदद कैसे कर पाऊंगा?”
एक दिन स्कूल में शिक्षक ने एक नई पुस्तक दी और कहा कि यह किताब अगले दिन तक पूरी पढ़कर आनी होगी। लाल बहादुर के पास वह किताब ले जाने की अनुमति तो थी, लेकिन समस्या यह थी कि उनके पास रात को पढ़ने के लिए लालटेन नहीं थी। घर पर अंधेरा था, और तेल खरीदने के लिए पैसे नहीं थे। उस रात लाल बहादुर ने ठान लिया कि चाहे जो भी हो, वह किताब पढ़ेगा। वह अपने गाँव के पास एक सड़क किनारे बनी रोशनी वाले खंभे के पास चला गया।
पूरी रात वह खंभे की धीमी रोशनी में बैठकर किताब पढ़ता रहा। ठंडी हवा और अंधेरी रात में उसने अपना ध्यान बिल्कुल नहीं भटकने दिया। पन्ने पलटते हुए, वह हर शब्द को समझने की कोशिश करता रहा। जब सूरज उगा, तो उसने महसूस किया कि उसने पूरी किताब को पढ़ लिया है और समझ भी लिया है। उस दिन स्कूल में शिक्षक ने जब उससे सवाल पूछे, तो वह बिना रुके जवाब देता गया। शिक्षक उसकी मेहनत और लगन से इतने प्रभावित हुए कि उन्होंने लाल बहादुर को आगे बढ़ने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया।
लाल बहादुर का यह साहस और दृढ़ संकल्प ही उनकी पहचान बन गया। संघर्षों के बावजूद उन्होंने कभी हार नहीं मानी और हर मुश्किल को एक अवसर के रूप में लिया। यह घटना उनके जीवन का केवल एक उदाहरण थी, लेकिन यह दर्शाती है कि कैसे उन्होंने अपनी इच्छाशक्ति और मेहनत से हर बाधा को पार किया। यही गुण उन्हें आगे चलकर देश के महान नेताओं में से एक बनने में मददगार साबित हुआ।

To reach school, he had to cross a wide and fast-flowing river. While other children in the area had boats, Lal Bahadur did not have the money to afford even the small fare for a boat ride. Instead, he devised a bold method of crossing the river. He would place his clothes on his head and swim across the river. Once on the other side, he would change into his dry clothes behind the bushes before heading to school. This was no easy task. During the monsoon, the river’s current became much stronger, but Lal Bahadur’s determination remained steadfast in all seasons. His mother often told him, “Why endure so much difficulty? Stop going to school and stay at home.” But Lal Bahadur would always reply, “If I give up my studies, how will I help you when I grow up?”
One day, the school teacher gave him a new book and instructed the class to read it thoroughly by the next day. Lal Bahadur was allowed to take the book home, but he faced a challenge—his house had no lantern, and he could not afford to buy oil for one. That night, Lal Bahadur resolved that no matter what, he would read the book. He walked to a streetlight near the village road and sat beneath it.
The entire night, he read the book under the dim streetlight. The cold breeze and the dark night could not distract his focus. Turning page after page, he tried to absorb every word. When the sun rose, he realized he had read and understood the entire book. That day in school, when the teacher asked questions, Lal Bahadur answered them all without hesitation. The teacher was so impressed by his dedication and determination that he encouraged Lal Bahadur to continue striving for excellence.
This courage and resolve became the hallmark of Lal Bahadur’s character. Despite facing endless challenges, he never gave up and treated every difficulty as an opportunity. This incident was just one example of his life, but it reflected how he overcame every obstacle with sheer willpower and effort. These traits helped him become one of the greatest leaders of the country in later years.
Lal Bahadur Shastri’s life teaches us that no matter how tough the circumstances, if the goal is clear and hard work is unyielding, success is inevitable. His every struggle serves as a reminder that victory belongs to those who dare to go beyond their limits.
